Welcome to Iceland

iceland

No, we haven’t moved to Iceland. Yet.

I mean, how cool would that be? But we’d have to speak Icelandic if we wanted to emigrate from the US and become Icelandic citizens. Have you ever heard Icelandic? Or seen it? I don’t have much of a facility for language, so I don’t see either Ayin or me ever meeting that requirement.

It’s the domain name for this site that lives in Iceland. The Icelandic domain authority manages domains with .is extensions. Registering it five years ago (yikes, has it really been that long?) was an adventure, and today I’ve moved the management and billing for the domain away from a US company to my own account at the Icelandic domain authority. Which was also an adventure, so I’m happy—and mildly amazed—that everything is still working the way it should.

If I broke something, well, I guess you won’t be reading this. Or I’ll have moved the site to another domain. Like hannah.center, hannah.diy, hannah.win, hannahbooks.us, hannahgram.com, hannahphillips.us, or hannahxx.com.

Yes, I own all those. Why? That’s a good question. I’m a domain name geek, I suppose. At one time, I owned almost 400 domain names. Now, between Ayin and me, we “only” own 45. Ayin has their full name as a domain, ayin.es, which not many people can boast.

And yes, there aren’t really sites on most of those domains. So why have them? Another good question with the same answer as the last one. But, in my defense, I once owned a domain name for ten years before the perfect use presented itself out of nowhere (well, it wasn’t nowhere, I started a podcast, like everyone else on earth), so maybe that will happen with one of the Hannah domains.

But I digress.

So far, so good with this move. But we’ll see if the old registrar creates any trouble around the renewal date (in about a month). Things could get dicey. But it’s the ever-looming potential for catastrophe that makes life exciting, right?
